This was where Fyran belonged—on the hunt, stalking his prey, using his skills to eliminate those who would cause harm to innocents.
That was justification for a stabbing where he grew up.
“Maybe we should give you a good look over just to make sure you’re all right?” offered a third woman with a giggle.
“Great. Just wave me down if you’d like anything else.” I want you. Karak’duun, where the hell had that thought come from?
Jealousy. What the fuck?
“Hunter. My name is Hunter.” Avery smiled softly. “Have a good day…Hunter.”
Karak’duun, it’s finally happened. Earth has shattered my mind. I’m insane.
And that pie really was delicious…
I’m going crazy.
Totally inappropriate, Avery. Jerry would have words.
But it would be so worth it. If only she could be that bold.
Tongue tied, Avery? What is wrong with you? There is a fine ass man flirting me with me. How else am I supposed to react? I’m no good in these situations! I’m just going to sigh and daydream, that’s what I’m going to do. He’s just…
“Welp, would you look at all those tables and empty drink glasses,”
He is definitely flirting with me. And she…she wasn’t sure how to handle it.
Well, there goes my chance to talk to Hunter again.
Not like I could consider that talking. More like stuttering, blathering, and bumbling. I can write ‘em, but I sure can’t say ‘em.
Still believing in fairytales and happily-ever-afters, Avery? Maybe you spent too long with your nose stuck in a book.
Though she couldn’t quite call his expression neutral, she couldn’t really call it anything else, either. But his eyes…
Grave. Smoldering. Intense.
Okay, so maybe there were wor...

But still, he had been flirting with her. Blatantly flirting. He hadn’t tried to hide his interest even one bit.
Whatever his reasons, Avery knew one thing—she wanted to see Hunter again.
Only one thing was clear—the beast dwelling inside Fyran had chosen Avery as its own, and it wasn’t going to be denied.
Ah, fuck. I’m going to Denver.
Karak’duun, he wanted Avery. Wanted her…as his lifemate. Though he wasn’t even certain of what that truly meant, he knew down in the deepest parts of himself that Avery was meant to be his mate—and that he’d settle for nothing less. He would have her. All of her.
A cold shower. That will help, won’t it?
Should be figuring out the Gregor situation. Oh, fuck off. His mission objectives had expanded, his priorities had changed. It was time for a different sort of reconnaissance.
Just had a long day. Figured it’d be better if I ended it talking to you.
No, you don’t, he replied quickly. And it felt like a lot longer than one day. You don’t need to be self-conscious with me, Avery. You’re not going to scare me off.
But what I said was true. I really, really missed seeing you today, Hunter.
“I wish I had a man who looked at me like that. Like he couldn’t wait to stick his head between my legs and—” Avery’s eyes widened as she snapped her head toward her co-worker. “Brandy!”
The woman laughed. “Well, it’s true! He looks like he wants to eat you up.” Brandy nudged her elbow against Avery’s arm again and grinned. “Let me know if you ever get tired of him. He can play Big Bad Wolf with me any time.”
He’d look pretty damned good with fangs. All the better to eat me with.
All the better to hear you with, my dear.
“I…have ten more minutes until my shift is over. Is there anything you’d like while you wait?” she asked. Hunter leaned across the counter, hooked her apron with a finger, and drew her closer. “You.” “Sorry, sir. I’m not on the menu.” She bent toward him until her mouth was next to his ear. “Yet.”
Eat me. Drink me.
“You touch her again,” Hunter said in a low, gravelly voice that was barely more than a growl, “and I’ll tear off your fucking hand.”
“Another word,” Hunter snarled, “and you’re fucking next.”
He was a hell of a lot sexier too.
“Any of you so much as come near her again, I’ll make this look mild.” He twisted his hand slightly. The man with his face on the table cried out in fresh pain. “Am I fucking understood?” Hunter growled.
“Say it, vaerina. Say you’re mine.”
I’m not doing my job if you guys don’t feel safe here.”
“And Hunter? You’re…safe with him? He seems pretty intense.”
“He is, but I feel safest with him. He’d never hurt me, Jerry. I know it.”
“We’re family here, Avery. If you ever need help, you just ask.”
I want that kind of family someday.
“Not here, vaerina. You’re for no one to see but me.”
“I’d gouge out the eyes of anyone who saw you.”
“No one is going to ever hurt you again, Avery. I’ll do anything it takes to ensure that.”
“There are children here,” a man said from nearby in the sort of exasperated, patronizing tone Avery had heard so much in her youth. The muscles of Hunter’s jaw ticked. He swung his head aside to look at the man and growled, “How the fuck you think they got here?”
