For anyone burdened by the pain of their past. Keep going. It’s worth it.
A smile stretched across her face again before something back inside the house pulled her attention away from me, and it was like a spark lit up in my chest because I knew in that brief moment that smile belonged to me.
“It’s been over a year,” I finally said. “Since?” “Since …” I made a motion with my hands, hoping he would finish that thought silently. The tension on his face slowly melted into realization. “Ah. Since your kitten was touched?” My cheeks had to look like two giant tomatoes with how deeply they burned. “Oh, my God! That’s a horrifying way to put it. Can you never say that again?”
I couldn’t help but wonder if the amazing parts of my daughter had come from him rather than me. But that wasn’t something I’d ever know the answer to.
“I’m gwad I’m wactose intowewent because Uncle Andwe says those muffins tasted awfow!” Violet scrunched up her face. Tic and I burst into laughter as Logan lurched forward, shushing her.
“We don’t always get to choose who our family is, but sometimes, our family chooses us.”
“That girl would run into an unmarked van if the driver said there were Popsicles and porcupines inside!” I shouted in a hushed tone. His face soured. “That sounds so sticky and sharp.”
Vivamus, moriendum est, I mouthed the phrase silently. “Let us live since we must die.”
“I want to know your favorite color and the way you take your coffee. I want to know what your laugh sounds like when you think something is really funny. I want to know what kind of music makes you want to dance and the kind of dessert you save room for at a restaurant.”
“And the breathless ways you can say my name when I tease you with my tongue.” “Danny …” I said his name again, but it came out ragged. He pulled back enough for me to meet his gaze again. “Yeah, I’d imagine it sounds something like that.”
“What are your favorite flowers?” I asked, inching closer. “I don’t know if I should tell you. For all I know, you might start showing up at my door every day with a bouquet in your hands,” she teased. “Not every day.” I cocked my head. “Seriously, what are they?” Her fingers barely threaded through mine as she glanced up at the ceiling and then back at me with a soft grin. “Violets.”
You know how they call people triple threats when they can act, sing, and dance? Well, I was quickly discovering that Danny was all the threats. My God, the man was dripping with sex. I could wash my clothes on the vast hills and grooves of his abs that he had put on display the first day we met. He played guitar. He could apparently sing too. Not to mention the tattoos and the killer blue eyes that made me weak in the knees. His confidence, though, might be the most threateningly attractive thing about him.
“You have no idea all the vulgar things I can make that pretty mouth of yours sing if you let me.”
“I’m not wearing any underwear.” I caught her wrist before she could get too far and threw it away, relieved to finally have such a reaction to her. “Then, please keep off the furniture.” Liam nearly spat out his drink. Her eyes narrowed. “Excuse me?”
“Is he drunk?” Tic asked. Liam shook his head. “Nope.” I tested the volume and ran my fingers through the strings once. The girl sitting in front of the speaker quickly covered her ears in pain as the room erupted with the sound. Perfect. I climbed up onto the table, and the room cheered, thrusting their drinks into the air. “That’s a good way to get the cops’ attention,” Tic shouted. My mouth curled up into a grin as I looked down at him. “They’re not the ones I’m looking to get attention from.”
“Well, you got me here,” I shouted in his face as I held my hands out. “Now, wha—” His mouth was on mine before I could finish.
“Why did you feel like you had to ask me that?” I dared to ask. Waiting for her to answer felt like an eternity. She blinked up at me slowly and then finally muttered, “Because I don’t know who Violet’s father is.”
“He. Took. Advantage. Of. You,” Danny gritted out slowly. “The fact that you can’t confidently recall with one hundred percent certainty that you didn’t tell him to eff off doesn’t exempt him from that. And if you ever figure out who it was, I’ll rip his fucking esophagus from his throat. That I promise you.”
“I wanted to take it easy, seeing as how I haven’t even taken you on a date yet.” He shrugged. “Ah, yes, I forgot you’re a gentleman.” “That’s right.” “The kind that will eat me out before he takes me out, but is too cheap to buy dessert,” I taunted him playfully.
“You have no idea the kind of sweet tooth I have,” he muttered, pressing his hips between my legs. The comforter was too thick, and I wished I could remove it. “Dessert is my favorite part of the meal, but I sometimes like to watch you enjoy it first.”
“You think she was, like, a cat in another lifetime?” “Yeah. One of the annoying ones that knocks shit off tables all the time.”
“Tell me, Logan. Tell me you’re mine,” he whispered roughly, thrusting into me.
I knew what it was like to feel utterly alone in the world. To feel hopeless and empty.
Loving someone the way Danny loved me was loving an imperfect person perfectly. They saw the sides of you that were dark and ugly, the parts of you that you didn’t think were worth loving and they did it anyway. And you hadn’t had to do anything to earn it. They simply took your broken parts and put them back together again. It was real and pure. A rarity to find in any lifetime. It was unconditional.
“You’re serious? I’m going to be a dad?” She dragged her liquid-gold gaze across the room to where Violet was dancing and smiled. “What made you think you weren’t one already?”
