Like anything else worth having, love was earned, not seized.
“You aren’t dating, right?” Kai’s tone said he wasn’t asking. “Just two sworn enemies on a quest, she said.” “And she’s my sworn enemy, not yours,” Astaroth snapped.
“Fuck chivalry,” Astaroth rebutted instantly. “I have amnesia.”
She was getting to know his tells though, and she recognized he used snark to deflect attention whenever he did something heroic. And yes, the retrieval of Mexican food did count as heroism.
“No.” His denial was loud. “Don’t let her diminish you. You’re a warrior, Calladia, and you don’t need to apologize for being who you are.”
“Love does mean helping someone be the best version of themselves,” she said. “It means supporting and uplifting them. It means even when you argue, you do it from a place of compassion.”
“Loving my potential isn’t the same as loving me. I’m done letting you tear me down.
