“When the Queen is asleep, Luther’s in charge. When they’re both asleep, I’m in charge. When all three of us are asleep, you’re in charge.” “If the three of you are asleep, then there’s no one left for me to be in charge of.” “Exactly.”
“I was so scared I’d lost you,” I whispered. “After the attack, I thought...” “Never.” He placed his palm over my heart in a mirror image of my gesture. “I’m with you until the very end.”
Over the next hours, we gorged ourselves on flaky fish and flame-roasted mushrooms, tucking the eggs away until morning. We laughed as we tossed berries into each other’s mouths across the fire, and Taran was heartbroken to discover I had no survival trick for brewing ale or wine from scratch.
If I’m worth fighting for, then why aren’t you fighting for me? I wondered. Luther’s gaze snapped to me. I let out a quiet huff and looked away.
Most people would say to fall is to give up. To accept total helplessness to one’s predicament. For those fleeting, frightening moments in the air, both time and your heart stand still, and you’re at the mercy of gravity’s pull—and whatever awaits you on the ground. But that’s only what happens when you’re pushed. When you jump—when you stand on the ledge, look down, and embrace what you see with arms wide open—there’s nothing helpless about it at all. Instead of terrifying, it’s liberating. You’re not in freefall... you’re in flight.
“Enjoy the throne while you can, Remis.” I tapped my temple. “Just don’t forget who wears the Crown.”
“Show me your worst, my darling, and I’ll show you how far my love can go.”
But this was a promise that I was enough, and that was the promise I’d needed most of all.
If you are outnumbered or overwhelmed, or if all seems lost, just keep moving. Onward, until the very last breath.
Luther stood at its mouth, arms crossed over his chest, looking absolutely murderous.
He lowered his forehead to mine. “Diem Bellator, you are everything I’ve ever wanted. You are my joy and my salvation. You are perfect. And I promise you this—I will love you for as long as love exists.”
