He shrugged. “What can I say? I like a deal,” he preened. “And this is the best thing I’ve lucked up in the last five years. It satisfies two things. I need to settle down and I need a foothold in the heart of Blackwood. And I want both… right now.”
“I don’t need to think about shit, I’m not some virgin on auction to pay my family debts,” I snapped, standing too. “Everything else might be available to you because you’re a Sterling, but I personally could not care less. Fuck you.”
Wealthy, smart, fine, ambitious, slick at the mouth, thighs bigger than my head and an ass to match? A fucking unicorn.
This was going to be fun.
I’m sure you ladies won’t mind if I borrow my lovely fiancée for a moment.”
“You don’t know what I know, baby girl,” he said. “Tell me, what other nigga has what I have, to do you like I did?” “This one.”
“Whatever the fuck your name is,” Orion immediately countered, with the most disrespectful shrug I’d ever seen. I… didn’t even know a shrug could be disrespectful.
“That whole… not wearing my ring yet thing?” he said, pulling a black velvet box from his pocket to lift before me. “Let’s fix that.”
He shook his head, rolling up his sleeve to past his elbow. “You’ve got me all wrong, Nalani. I’m generous with mine. Which… you do realize that’s what you are now, right?”
“I prefer to believe I belong to myself.”
He smiled. “I’ll let you have that delus...

“If I ever see another man that close to you…we’re all going to have a horrible day.”
“First of all, don’t ever refer to my wife in that manner.
“That fucking mouth of yours,” he warned, leaning over me to plant his hands on the counter, boxing me in. His gaze locked mine in the mirror as he pushed against me. “Is going to get you in trouble.”
“People have said that to me all my life, and yet… here I am. Unchecked thus far.”
“Give me time, Nala, we just met.”
“Fiancée.”
It was as if the synapses that controlled my movement were connected to his brain instead of my own.
he looked me dead in the eyes and shrugged. “It's yours now, Nala. Do whatever you feel.”
“You can pretend about a lot of things, Nala. But don’t you dare look me in the face and fictionalize the chemistry. It’s there. You can’t deny it.”
“Even if I had.” He shrugged, taking the keys from me to place in a lockbox on the garage wall. “I’m a call away and don’t ever hesitate to dial it. You’re my wife.”
“Technically,” I reminded him, earning a scowl.
“Legally.” He approached me again, looming over me in a way that made my breath catch in my throat. “And I believe at this point, our vows are a little too well-consummated for you to still...

“Nobody is asking your ass to predict the future, but that nigga ran up in my shit—yes, mine, because you, Nalani, are mine—snatching on you like he runs something and it never crossed your mind that might be something I needed to know about from you?”
“Soren said you were scared. And my wife doesn’t have to be scared of anybody.”
“You were just a call away.”
“Exactly. So what are you going to do next time anything happens?”
“I’m going to...

I reflected a bit on the conversation just then, one of the first that was just… Cool. Casual. It was… kind of nice. And when I left the bathroom, to find her still in my bed, peacefully sleeping again…that was even nicer.
In what seemed like the blink of an eye, Nalani was on her feet, reaching across the table. Jess couldn’t get out of the way in time before Nalani had a handful of hair, dragging her across the dishes, spilling shit everywhere.
“Not at all, you should be admired,” he answered. “I’d just like everybody to know who you belong to while they’re looking.”
“You didn’t think… what?” he asked. “That I wanted you? Nala… there has never been a point in a time where that was the case. Where it was even a question,” he added. “The question is… can I have you?”
“Fuck the contract,” he growled, moving in closer to me, looking me in the face. When I backed up, into the wall, he moved in again, essentially trapping me there as he met my gaze. “I’m telling you… beyond what’s on the paper, that I want you. I want to know you, and… have you, Nalani. I…” He pushed out a sigh, looking away for a moment like he was choosing his words. “I want this to be… real. Tell me if that’s something we can work toward. Something we can do?”
“A massive dick. Skillful tongue.”
