For all the women just waiting to be rescued by a shirtless mountain man. Here, have three instead.
She stares up at me with big, blue eyes that sucker punch me right in the damn chest. I don’t usually like children—too loud and demanding—but there’s something about this tiny speck of sass and fire that I find endearing. “I missed you, giant.” I blink, taken aback. “Me?” A smile blooms across her pink lips. “Where have you been?” “Hiding, obviously.” “You’re too big and fat to hide from me!”
There is nothing fine about the mess that Willow showed up in. If she thinks it’s okay to be in pain, we’re gonna have a serious problem.
His heartbeat is a steady roar against my ear, so loud it almost vibrates. Buddum. Buddum. Buddum. “Zach.” His hand stills in my hair as he ceases massaging my scalp. “Yeah, babe? You back with me?” “Kinda. Your heart is beating really fast.” “You scared me for a moment there.” “I scared myself. Sorry, things just got a bit much.” “Don’t worry about it.” But still, his arms don’t move to release me. He’s cuddling me so close, I can feel the rise and fall of his chest with each inhale he takes.
“Come to bed, Willow. You need to sleep.” “Bed?” she squeaks. I force her to look at me. “Not like that. Let me hold you. When you wake up screaming, I’ll be there. I’ll fight your demons for as long as you need me to.” “Do you promise?” Willow whimpers. “I swear on my fucking life. No one will ever hurt you again.”
