Nico lifts my chin. “There is no end for us,” he says with certainty. “It would be like trying to stop the tides. Impossible. My reason for breathing is you.”
“What do you have to smile about?” “I think I have a solution.” “Yeah, what is it?” I raise my glass to my lips and smirk. “I’m going to make Bella Isle Ciccula my wife.”
It’s funny how someone not worth your time can silently destroy your confidence when they’re not even in your life anymore.
Somewhere buried very deep inside me, it hurts to know I’m nothing more than a pawn in his game of power. When once upon a time, I was his everything.
He dimmed her fire, something I don’t plan on doing once we’re married. I don’t want to dim her anything. I want to ignite it and feel her hellfire sear my skin.
Because I’m the monster hiding in the shadows just out of view.
She slams the door, and the sound waves ripple through the room. She’s going to be a handful. A real pain in the ass. Why does that excite me so much?
About knowing I had given my heart to the enemy and how I must do whatever it takes to get it back.
I’m winding her up, and she looks like a volcano about to erupt.
“You can have anything for the right price.” He slides on a pair of sunglasses. “And I can afford the right price.”
God, she’s fucking perfect.
“You killed him,” I say shakily. He removes a handkerchief from his jacket pocket. “I will kill any man who dares to put his hands on you. Nobody touches what is mine.” He leans forward and hands me the handkerchief to wipe the blood off my face. “You would do well to remember that.”
Fear flashes in her eyes and I want to take that fear and set fucking fire to it.
She steps into the room, and I can’t take my eyes off her.
She’s fucking phenomenal.
I’m so affected I’ve momentarily lost use of my motor functions.
And if I’m good at anything, it’s negotiating something until I get what I want.
But the heart can’t help but want what it wants.
“Does anything make you nervous, Don De Kysa?” “No.” “Nothing?” “No.” I want to tell her that the worst has already happened to me, so I have nothing left to fear. That losing her was the darkest feeling I’d ever known. Even now, after all the bloodshed and violent business undertakings where people have attempted to take my life, losing her was the worst. But I don’t tell her.
“Careful, Bella,” I warn. “There is only so much a man can take.”
I look at Vincent. “Did you love her?” “No.” “Did she love you?” “No.” He pauses, then adds, “But for a moment there, we were each other’s only sunlight.”
Another truth I realized today. My wife is an angel. If only she’d never married the devil.
“Ah yes, he did use to fuck you,” I say, not seeing any point in holding back. If the witch wants to flex, I’m going to flex right back. “But he grew tired of it and came looking for me.”
A face wild with determination to make Luca pay. Behind him lay the bodies of the men who tried to stop him from getting to me.
I’d rather fucking die than lose her.
“No.” I shake my head. “We’re like fire and ice. Made to destroy each other.”
Hell has officially frozen over. Domenico De Kysa, the Heartless King from the North, is on his knees.
“I’m in love with you, Bella. I need you to trust me when I say I will move heaven and Earth to protect you from my rivals. You don’t need to run away from me. I will keep you safe.”
There was nothing they could do, the doctor says. Despite their attempts, Nico died in surgery, and they could not save him.
and I realize I don’t miss a thing about my old life. I have all that I need.
