What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?
I am the darkness between stars, and the roots beneath the earth.
“The darkness plays its own game,” she says. “It makes its own rules,” she says. “And you have lost.”
Perhaps an enemy’s company is still better than none.
“How sad, that you had only dreams.”
let the dusk give way to dark, burrow against Henry and hope for stars.
“You’re perfect,” the man murmurs, stroking a thumb along Henry’s cheek.
“I am the one who sees kindling and coaxes it to flame. The nurturer of all human potential.”
They look at you and see whatever they want … Because they don’t see you at all.
“But this is the difference between us, Adeline,” he whispers, fingers grazing her chin. “I will always answer.”
“Because happiness is brief, and history is lasting, and in the end,” he says, “everyone wants to be remembered.”
His mouth hovers over her own, his voice dropping to nothing but a breeze. “You belong to me.” There is a sound like thunder in the back of his throat. “With me.”
