“So, you’re falling in love with me, huh?” I smirk, still in disbelief that he spoke those words.
“I’m already there, but I figured you deserve to hear it first.” He takes a nervous breath and tucks my hair behind my ear. “I love you, Laiken. I am so massively in love with you, and I’m sorry that I didn’t realize it sooner.”
He slows down as he leans forward and kisses me. “Not tonight, baby. Tonight, I want to love you.”
I chose the wrong road and lost the one girl who means more to me than anyone. So, I turned the fuck around and chose again.
“I’m still the same shithead. What changed for you?” She looks back at me and smirks. “Puberty hit you like a fucking truck.”
“No,” he says with a small laugh. “I’m sure that will happen eventually, but you once told me I’m not allowed to skip steps. So, Laiken…” He pauses just to drive me insane. “Will you officially be mine? My out-in-the-open, hold-your-hand-no-matter-who-can-see girlfriend?”
My gaze meets Hayes’s, and I bite my lip. “There’s nothing he does that isn’t attractive.”
“Will you please move in with me so that I don’t have to spend another cold and lonely night without you for the rest of my life?” For. The. Rest. Of. My. Life.
“What do you mean?” I ask nervously. “Hayes,” she sighs. “It took you until a month ago just to say I love you.” I huff out a laugh. “Yeah, because I’m a pussy. Not because I haven’t been completely fucking gone for you from the start.”
“Because I asked her to marry me, and she said yes.” My mom’s eyes widen. “Okay, I didn’t see that coming.” “It’s fast. I know.” “It’s NASCAR,” she corrects.
“You have a living will, right?”
“I’m happy for you, sis, even if you are stealing my best friend.” “Please. You’re opening a bar together,” I tell him. “You’re going to get more time with him than I will.” “Rightfully so. He was mine first.”
“Absolutely. I love her, but she’s ruthless.” He puts his hand on my shoulder. “Best of luck to you. Please know there are no returns. All sales are final.”
