“So, you’re falling in love with me, huh?” I smirk, still in disbelief that he spoke those words. His expression turns skeptical as he hums. “I mean, you’re all right.”
“I’m already there, but I figured you deserve to hear it first.” He takes a nervous breath and tucks my hair behind my ear. “I love you, Laiken. I am so massively in love with you, and I’m sorry that I didn’t realize it sooner.”
“Yeah, I should probably get in there before you lose your best player because his best friend slaughtered him with a broken hockey stick.”
“He won’t come out?” He shakes his head, exhaling heavily. “I tried to go in, but he threw this at my face.” As he holds up the hockey puck, my eyes widen. “Don’t worry. I managed to catch it.”
“Fuck me,” I breathe. “I want you to fuck me.” He slows down as he leans forward and kisses me. “Not tonight, baby. Tonight, I want to love you.”
All the pain and all the heartbreak—it was worth it because it got us here, where he’s loving me the best way he knows how.
I chose the wrong road and lost the one girl who means more to me than anyone. So, I turned the fuck around and chose again.
And while she glared at me like she wanted to set me on fire and watch me burn, all I wanted was to see her smile. She’s always had such a pretty smile.
“I’m sure that will happen eventually, but you once told me I’m not allowed to skip steps. So, Laiken…” He pauses just to drive me insane. “Will you officially be mine? My out-in-the-open, hold-your-hand-no-matter-who-can-see girlfriend?”
If there’s ever a time when this girl is all I have, I’ll be okay, because she’s all I will ever need.
Three things… 1. You’re gorgeous. 2. I’m the luckiest man alive. and 3. Thank fuck that live wallpaper is a thing.
But the absolute best part, the part I didn’t even think about while we were sneaking around, is being able to wear Hayes’s jersey, with his number drawn on my cheek in eyeliner as I cheer him on.
The guys that have the money to wine and dine you are nice, but the guys that aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty—those are the men you want. They’re the ones who will fuck you until three in the morning, when you’re so spent from orgasming over and over that you can hardly move.
“Dance with me,” I tell her. She giggles. “Babe, there’s no room.” I glance around a moment before sliding the coffee table right out of the way. “There. Now, dance with me.”
“You’re really pretty,” he slurs. “Do you have a boyfriend?” Jesus Christ. “Yep.” He exhales sadly. “Damn. He’s really lucky.” I walk him over to his truck and slip my hand in his pocket to grab his keys. He jumps at the contact and spins around, putting his hands up. “Whoa. How will your boyfriend feel about you touching me like that?” Seriously, this is the last time I leave the two of them alone for a few hours. Like, ever. “Hayes, baby,” I say sweetly. “You are my boyfriend.” His eyes light up. “Really? Me?” I nod. “That’s fucking sweet!”
I have a person that doesn’t only make my day better but makes me look forward to every day after it. I have someone who has taught me what it feels like to care about another person more than I could ever care about myself. My other half. My favorite person. My once-in-a-lifetime kind of love.
“If I’ve learned anything over the last few months, it’s that this life isn’t worth living if I don’t have you by my side. I’m already the luckiest man in the world for getting any time with you at all, but I’m greedy and I want every second you have to give. So, for the love of God, marry me, because anything less than forever with you just isn’t enough for me.”
She may have been the one to fall first, but it was me who ended up falling harder.
