“No. Those are Christian Louboutins. My only ones. And that bag …” My stomach rolled at how much money was floating out to sea. “It was so expensive.” “Oh really?” He smiled down at me genuinely. A huge smile. I think it was the biggest one I’d ever seen on him. “How much?”
He hummed, “What size shoe do you wear, Clara?”
He was a charmer who spoke beautiful Spanish and flew us around the world for a few years before we found out about his other family, leaving my mother with nothing. It broke her and ultimately broke us. She never got over his betrayal, and I remember how she became obsessed with it being our fault.
And if I couldn’t live for me, I couldn’t live at all.
“And without the makeup, I see the imperfections that make you perfect.” He said it so easily, in that decisive tone that was meant to propel everything forward without emotion. “Huh?” “With nothing to define you, you’re just like everyone else, Clara. Your freckles, the way you blush, the way your lashes are a hint of red is what defines you. You’re painting over a perfect canvas.”

“Looking at what’s mine is disrespectful. I can either go out and knock heads around all night or enjoy you in my bed. I’ll do either if that’s what you want.”

except Noah continued, “Here to see my girl and her bakery, of course.” I’d never seen Dominic stand taller and really size someone up. He didn’t even do it here. He was utterly confident in his ability to outshine another man, and yet I saw the way his jaw ticked when Noah said my girl.
“Honestly, if you don’t know how to take care of her, Dom, I’m coming for you.” Before I could reply, he cut me off. “Not because I want her. I don’t. I actually came to tell her that specifically. I got a girl I’m going to wife up if it’s the last thing I do.” “You …” I stopped. “What the fuck, man?” He chuckled as he backed away from me. He’d been irritating the hell out of me for no reason. “If you intend to wife up some girl, better make sure she doesn’t know that you came to visit your friend with benefits, dumbass.”
Didn’t she know I only wanted it from the people who wouldn’t give it to me? Her. She was the only fucking person.
“I just wanted pictures up of people I care about.” I think I lost my heart there. Lost it all to him. “But I’m up there.” “Yes. Well, I think I might care about you most.”
Quietly fixing everybody’s problems behind closed doors and then acting like a freaking jerk to our faces? Is this the oldest sibling in you?”
I want to just be enough for someone. I deserve to be.”
“Do you know she’ll be able to ask me for the rest of her life to jump, and I’ll ask how high?
