Among those to emerge were six Firsts: Falein, goddess of wisdom and cleverness; Celeste, goddess of the sky and moon; Anala, goddess of day, fire, and the sun; Serafina, goddess of the stars and dreams; Achaz, god of beginnings; and Arius, god of endings.
Fae could not deny a Legacy anything unless they were claimed and Marked. She could say no, but that didn’t necessarily mean anything to them.
The Arius Kingdom was the definition of cruel and wicked, which fit, she supposed, since they were descendants of Arius, the god of death and endings.
“What are you going to do, Tessie? March over there and ask for it back?” he chided.
“I choose Tessalyn Ausra to be my bonded Source,” Theon announced, his voice skittering over her bones.
“I am Theon St. Orcas, Heir to the Arius Kingdom. You are Tessalyn Ausra. I have Selected you to be my Source. You obey me above all others. My desires are your desires. You are mine.”
Be what they want you to be now, so you can be who you were meant to be later.
“No, beautiful,” he said, shaking his head. “You look like salvation and temptation all rolled into one.”
“You would,” Theon remarked. “You will have to excuse her. She’s been in a mood the last several days.”
No one ever knew what to do with her except shove her aside. Lock her away. Too wild to be something, so forced to be nothing.
She wouldn’t survive this. It would break her. And she didn’t burn when she broke. She shattered, and the world shattered with her.
“You only do so because I am your Source,” Tessa spat. “You do not do it because you care for me. You do it because you need me.”
“If that is what you choose to believe,” he said with a shrug. “But, even if that was true, this can be a mutually beneficial exchange. You provide me with what I need, and I provide you with everything you need.”
“Would you undo it?” Axel suddenly chimed in. “If you could go back and change things, would you? Would you pick a different Source?”
“No,” he finally answered, picking up his cards. “No. I wouldn’t pick someone else. Because just like she believes, I’m a bastard, and I can’t let her go now that I have her.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered into his shoulder. “I’m sorry, Theon. I didn’t know what else to do. I’m sorry.”
I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
“Tessa, you have nothing to apologize for. Please stop saying that. I’m here. I’m here, little storm,” he said softly, trying to soothe her as he spoke over her repeated apologies, but her trembling wouldn’t cease.
“You want me to stay in here? While you bathe?” he asked slowly, sure he was misunderstanding what she wanted.
“If you don’t want to, can Luka or Axel? I don’t want to be alone,” she repeated. “The quiet is too loud sometimes, and I feel trapped in it,” she added in a whisper.
Fuck if he was going to let Axel or Luka in here whi...

“Know that sometimes we must break to be forged into who we were meant to be,” she said, streaks of violet flickering in her eyes like lightning cutting through the flecks of gold. Then she bent and pressed her lips to Tessa’s brow. “You will break, Tessalyn. Make sure you get back up and take what is yours.”
“No one touches what is mine,”
But the well of power sleeping in his arms? He would soon have control over all of that, and then he could take control of Arius Kingdom.
It’s okay not to be okay, Tessa.”
Do we have a bargain?”
“It matters because very few want me, Theon!” she cried. “They want what I can give them, what I have to offer, but never me. And you have just told me you are no different. So I am trying to figure out what exactly it is you want from me—”
“Everything, Tessa,” Theon snarled, moving so quickly, Tessa didn’t register he’d even moved until he was before her once more, his hand loosely gripping her throat. “I want everything you have to give, and then I want more. I want every piece of you— every secret, every tempest raging in those stormy eyes. I want all your fear and all your pain, all your smiles and all your laughter. I want all your mornings and all your nights, all your days and months and years.”
“She had silver hair and silver eyes. More weapons than he could count. She had gifts of shadows but also fire as bright as the stars, and Theon saved her from imminent death when another in all black approached to kill her.”
“Will you finally let me take care of you, Tessa?” he asked, his voice low and rough as he took a single step towards her.
“I’m going to need verbal confirmation here, beautiful. I want to hear you say this is your choice.”
“He’s too controlling, and you’re not controlled enough. I told him over and over this would be a disaster. You’re two forces that should repel each other. Fire and shadows. Light and dark. Beginnings and endings. Instead, you’re drawn to each other.”
