The Protestant Reformation was founded on the principle that people did not need the Catholic Church to stand between them and the deity. In the 1800s, starting with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “transcendentalism,” American theology began to develop the idea that each person’s individual communication with God was possible because everyone has a spark of the divine within themselves, experienced as certain states of mind.
