“Thanks for stealing the bread, Kir.” “For the last time, I didn't steal it. I left a pumpkin.”
“We were so worried,” she whispered. “My boy, we were so worried.” “I am fine, Nonet. Nothing to be worried about. Please, take a seat.”
“Miss Raven Moonstone,” Bastian said, sweeping a hand toward me. “Please meet the elder members of the Fire Coven.”
“Thirteen?” I repeated. “We learned from Eden that the Harrowing targets the thirteenth witch with power down every family line.”
Blessed by the goddess and cursed by Death. Unmarked and very powerful, she is a conundrum.”
“Oh, please do say hello to the wraith on the ceiling for me,” Nonet said, sharing a
smile before she left the room.
For a moment, the tense room held the silence as if everyone was afraid to shatter something so precious when all that would follow was chaos.
“I guess I'll just have to lie here forever, contemplating the reason for my existence.”
“Why can't I see her?” Another tear fell. “Is she hiding from me?”
“It's hard,” Raven whispered, taking her hand.
“I’ve loved you and lost you, and missed you more than I could ever find words for.
And though I wondered how far she would let me go, this was all I needed from my golden witch. This was pure. A love that survived. Though I had not.
I love you. I’ve loved you since I was a child. It was never nothing. You are everything.”
And I see you. Your misery is not hidden from me, Kirsi Moondance.”
“Anyone that casts a spell toward you is my enemy. Anyone that has a single cruel thought about you is my enemy. Anyone that stands between you and whatever it is you want in this world is my enemy.”
“Fear is power,” I whispered, reminding him of words he once spoke to me. “I am not afraid, and I will not give them that power.”
“He loved her,” Torryn finished. “He might have damned the world, but he loved his daughter.”
“Don’t look at me like I’m some damsel in distress, needing to be saved from the dragon. I’ve got news for you. I am the dragon.”
“Don’t worry. I’m eternally single and focused.”
“You are my only weakness,” he breathed into my ear. “My only equal. My only future.
“You are blessed by the goddess. She has touched your face right here.
“I just need you. Don’t push me away.” “My beautiful little witch,” he said, pulling me into his lap. “You didn’t deserve this day. How can I make it up to you?”
“I love you,” I said, moving to kiss his lips. “More today than yesterday, and even more tomorrow.”
