“I believe every person gets to decide what happens to them after they die. Take me, for example. I’m going to become a comet and shoot from universe to universe.”
“Bratva business can wait. Love is in the air, little brother. Can you feel it?” “No,” I retorted flatly. “I can’t.” “And therein lies the problem. I’m going insane for this woman, and it’s fucking awesome. Highly recommended. Go find one and try it for yourself.”
It’s the mental, emotional comfort of feeling truly content. A hole in my soul that is no longer screaming.
“Do you want to hear my theory?” I ask. “I think you like when I fight you. Everyone else is scared of you, but I press back. And you like it. It turns you on. Doesn’t it, baby?”
“You got my son to fall in love with you. If you can do that, you can do anything.”
“She has me.” My mother just scowls. “I think we both know that that’s not true.”
“You want me to say it? Fine! Yes, I was beyond fucking terrified when I heard that explosion go off. I could barely see straight. It’s a wonder I managed to get myself down to you in one piece. But—fuck—but…”
I’ve known you my entire life, and I’ve loved and respected you for the entirety of it. But if it comes down to betting on you or Paige… brother, I’m betting the house on her.”
It only occurs to me when I can finally breathe again that my wife knows exactly what she’s doing. For the first time, this is a war I might lose.
I made myself uncomfortable for him without even considering what I wanted. I’ll have to unlearn that.
I just have to hope I’m not a fool for daring to believe I can have it all.
“I’m sorry I made you feel like you were not worthy of me, kiska. I’m sorry I forced you into a loveless marriage. But I’m most sorry for making you think that I didn’t care. Because the truth is, I love you, Paige Orlov.” He brings my hands to his lips, pressing a kiss to my knuckle. “I’m sorry I took so long to say it.”
“Relax,” he whispers in my ear. “Let me take care of you.”
I can almost hear my brother’s voice in my ear. The quiet moments are the ones you live for. That motherfucker was always right.
I take her hand and lead her over to the massive painting hanging on the wall. It’s a frontward-facing view of a running stallion. “Does the stallion come to life, rip out of the canvas, and come to my defense?” she asks, deadpan.
“We’ve christened almost every room in the house. It’s about time we found some new territory to defile.”
Usually, I’d try to come up with a more convincing lie, but I’m completely spent. My wife has a libido that’s dwarfing mine.
“Here’s to the resilient kids of shit parents.”
She laughs, and despite everything that’s going on right now, that laugh—it’s like honey to my soul.
Make it fucking rain blood.
He’s on my side—for now. But men in my position know that even your own dogs can rip your throat out at a moment’s notice.
“I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to make me blush twenty years from now.” “I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”
“Yes, they are. I will do whatever it takes to protect you, Paige. I’ll wade through hellfire to keep you safe. But if I can’t be there, I want you to be able to protect yourself.”
“Fine. Go feed those babies of mine. We’ll pick up where we left off later.”
“Never apologize for letting yourself be vulnerable. It’s the best part of being human.”
No. I don’t believe it. If Misha was dead, I would feel it.
You know the rules as well as I do. You know the punishment for betrayal.” The Tiger looks resigned to his fate. “Death by a thousand cuts.”
