Teeth. It was always the teeth that woke her. The way they scraped. The way she bled. The nightmare of that memory haunted her.
Death was a cruel and intoxicating master, enslaving not only its victims but also the living caught in its wake.
Death had followed Bel, reminding her she was bound to it, a servant to it, and her neck stung at the memory of sharpened teeth.
She was all darkness, and he was her light. She dwelled among the demons, but his smile was a gift from the angels.
“It’s a heart.” She held it forward for Garrett and Bel to examine. “They created a beautiful heart of roses to replace his organ.”
Someone had stood here. Someone had been watching her.
“Be careful.” He smirked, showing off those beautifully sharp teeth. “You never know what kind of predators are out here.”
I may be evil, but I am not the evil you’re hunting.”
She had arrested an innocent man, a man she cared for, and now he was dead.
