The roles of man and woman were so rigid, so constraining, completely controlling who we could be and what we would do with our lives. Everyone around me seemed so willing to play these parts, even Briar. Some even seemed like they wanted them. And while any mandatory role wouldn’t be one I’d choose for myself, the desires of an individual meant nothing in a pack. There was no point even considering them.

Hmmm... I appreciate what this character is saying...

It was a delicate balance with drunken men, one I’d only had a few occasions to practice in Allesdale. Be too aggressive, and it would provoke them. Be too sweet . . . and it would provoke them. They were just as temperamental and brutish as the Wolves in that regard.

“Beautiful name,” they said. “I’m Ora, palizya of this home.” Palizya. It roughly translated to “owner,” but the Valtan word was reserved for those who were neither man nor woman, and used the -ya endings to their titles.

I thanked the Moon that I met Ora, that they opened me up to the possibility that I could exist beyond what I was forced to be.
