The people of Eldar believed that dark mages were selfish and power-hungry. That we craved control over everything and everyone around us, and that we enjoyed seeing the fear and awe in our victims’ eyes as they bowed in submission and begged us for mercy. That we lied and cheated and killed without conscience or remorse. And that we would burn the whole fucking world down to get what we wanted. Unfortunately for them, they were absolutely right.

But what was even stranger was that none of them looked particularly eager either. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of them truly cared enough about dark mages not sharing their magic to warrant marching out here into a potentially very lethal battle.
“I told you in Malgrave that I’m not some fucking damsel that needs protecting,” I growled and yanked against his iron grip. “So why the hell would you try to sacrifice yourself for me? I’m not some weak—” “That’s not why I did it.” “We’re equals!” “I know.” “Then why did you…” I trailed off as he finally released me.
I had never seen Henry this flustered before. Usually, he was just standing behind Callan’s shoulder with that annoying scowl on his face. But ever since Paige joined our group, he seemed to be experiencing all sorts of emotions. Or rather, she seemed to be forcefully dragging those emotions out of him whether he wanted to or not.
“You’ve bought this house?” Paige blurted out, and swung an arm towards the building. “Why?” Audrey and I exchanged a long look. Then she lifted her shoulders in a light shrug. “For the future.” For a moment, no one said anything. Then it was as if a candle was lit behind both Henry and Paige’s eyes when they finally connected the dots. Matching grins bloomed on their faces.
“This ain’t Malgrave,” Callan said in response. “Dark mages can’t just walk the street openly here.” A villainous smile slid across Levi’s lips. “Yet.” Callan chuckled and shot him a knowing look. It was so casual. Like it was something that they had done a thousand times. Then, as if remembering themselves, both of them snapped their gazes away while masks of indifference descended on their features.
Levi pushed the tip of his sword harder against the base of my throat. “Answer.” “Yes,” I ground out. “Yes, what?” Hell damn it all. If I’d been able to move my arms, I would’ve punched his teeth down his fucking throat. But I couldn’t. So I swallowed my pride and averted my gaze. “Yes, sir.”
“Because I liked you, Callan.” His words shocked me enough that I just blinked back at him in stunned silence. “You were smart, skilled, and ballsy as hell. You were almost like a… little brother.” A hardness crept into his eyes. “Do you have any idea the kind of bloody retribution I rained down on the house you framed for your supposed death?”
“As a matter of fact, yes, I have.” A devilish smile played over his lips. “And lots of other types of restraints too.” I raised my eyebrows. Well, I supposed now I knew who had influenced Callan into developing certain sexual preferences. As if he could hear my thoughts, Callan slid his gaze to me. The intensity of his stare made a pulse of desire shoot through me.
His furious gaze snapped to me while he stabbed a hand towards the still gasping people kneeling before me. “You have committed a war crime.” “I’m sorry, a what?” “A war crime.” I snorted and flicked my hair behind my shoulder. “Darling, there are no crimes in war. Only winners… and losers.”
Dark amusement trickled through my annoyance, and a half smirk slid across my lips. “Or you’ll gag me?” Leaning closer, he slanted his lips over mine. “Oh I’ll do far worse than gag you, sweetheart.” After stealing a kiss, he pulled back and released my jaw. Then he went back to untying the leather strings. “So, what is it?”
“You’re going to fight me?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. “You just killed four people!” “All the more reason for you to back off.” “I am not afraid of you.” “You should be.” “Doing the right thing might be hard.” She shot more wind at me. “But someone has to stand up against all the bad things. And good will always win against evil in the end.” I sidestepped the wind blasts and rolled my eyes while touching my hands together. “You sound like Lance Carmichael.”
“Yes!” She threw her arms out. “I don’t care if the people who attack me are thirteen or eighty-three. If they willingly and knowingly attack me, they die. But hurting animals… That’s where I draw the line.”
“Well, I guess that concludes our business,” Levi said. Brushing his hands off, he looked between me and Callan. “Callan. Audrey. If you ever show your faces in Malgrave again, I will kill you. Or buy you a drink. If you ever feel brave or stupid enough to risk finding out which one it is, you know where to find me.”
