SOMETHING THAT ISN’T TRUE AT ALL I became the movie critic for the Akron Beacon Journal in 1999. Compared to my aforementioned stint as “amorphous pop culture reporter,” this was an incredibly effortless (and surprisingly boring) job. If you’ve ever found yourself thinking that watching movies for a living would be an easy, interesting way to make a living, you would be exactly half right. I continually found myself sitting at my office desk doing nothing; it is not a field with a great deal of breaking news. You pretty much just wait for the movies. To kill time, I would sometimes work on a novella about a guy from North Dakota who moved to Akron, Ohio, and became the film critic. I like to call this “reverse creativity.”
