The merchant’s son was short on experience, but he had been raised on a steady diet of books.
“Am I that easy to read?” “No,” he said simply. “But I like to think I’m learning.”
(he’d followed Lila to the end of the world and back, and it had been worth it).
He loved her. It scared him, but frankly, so did Lila. She always had.
“Has anyone told you,” he said, “that you’re gorgeous when you fight?”
“I like this new you,” she said, and there was something in her voice, a naked want that made him stiffen. “Do you?” he purred.

He wanted to hear her say it. Even if she did not wear the ring. He wanted to know that she chose to be here, with him.
“Because the bed would feel empty. Without you in it.”
Death is essential. A laying down. And I admit, I am looking forward to the rest.”

We choose the stories that bring us comfort. Believe what you want.”
