He wasn’t even fully in the room yet, and I was already sweating in my spot. He was tall and had broad shoulders and a jawline that belonged in a magazine.
it wasn’t hard to see the appeal. Bexley U’s best hockey player was charming in a sense, but a charming guy was a red flag if I ever saw one. Unfortunately, most girls loved red flags.
but a moment later came a nod of approval, as if he were proud that I had kept my word and didn’t stay holed up in our room on a Friday night. And for some reason, I liked knowing he was proud of me.
“You can cry in front of me, Claire. It’s alright.” His voice was soft and comforting, and those were two words I had never expected to use while describing someone like him.
Did Theo and I just have a silent agreement? The closer I got to him, the more my lips ached to curve. The hardness in his gaze softened, and it was obvious he was relieved to see me heading his way.
“It’s not like you turn them all down,” I blurted, seemingly more irritated than I actually was. Theo’s eyebrows climbed upward, and one of his lips disappeared behind his white teeth. “I would if you were my girl.”
“There you are,” I said, taking another step toward her. My foot went in between hers, and I tipped her head back with a finger under her chin, letting those brown locks fall down her back again. “What?” she whispered, voice shaky and not sounding at all like the tone she used with me, which was usually full of irritation, skimming right on top of subtle humor. “I said…” My hands went to her hips, and she sucked in a breath, straightening her spine and pushing her chest into mine. Damn. “There you are.”
“You like them because I bought them for you? Or do you just like them?” Silence filled the space between us,
I enjoyed her presence. Her laugh seeped into my chest, and although I was only getting a small piece of her, I didn’t want to let go of it.
while wearing his jersey, I got butterflies. And I was perceptive enough to know that it wasn’t a good thing to get butterflies from your fake boyfriend.
“It’s not fake for me, Claire. I think about you every second of the day. I wonder where you are, what you’re doing, how I can spend more time with you in between your busy schedule and my games…”
my heart began filling with warmth. “And don’t even get me started on seeing you in my jersey.”
“If you give me a piece of your heart, I’ll keep it safe.”
“Tell me you’re mine, Bryant. Tell me you trust me, and tell me that you can feel how much I love you just from the way I look at you.” “I’m yours, Theo. I always was.”
“And by the way”—he brushed his lips over mine—“we were always meant to last, Bryant.”
“Don’t make the same mistake we did. Keep that boy’s hand tucked in yours, no matter what.”
