He was cruel and twisted. Beyond redemption.
This was his game of chess; he was the king and I was the trapped queen that the Outfit needed to
protect. He moved me into position for his last move: the kill. Check.
“Genius and insanity are often interchangeable. Both have fueled the greatest events in human history.”
“She’s part of our world. Born and bred to be a mother to more Outfit bastards. Born and bred to obey like a mindless sheep. She was brought up to follow her shepherd without hesitation. He led her toward a pack of wolves. It’s his mistake, but she will be torn apart.”
“You are one of us. We bleed and we die together. We maim and kill together. Don’t forget your oath.”
“But those weddings became bloody because the guests got into fights with each other. I don’t think anyone has ever attacked a wedding, especially the bride, on purpose. Honor forbids it.”
“We are the Camorra. We have our own set of rules, our own idea of honor.”
“I won’t ask for anything yet. I won’t make it that easy for them. They attacked Las Vegas. They tried
killing my brothers, tried killing you and me. They brought war into my city, and I will bring war into their midst. I will destroy them from the inside. I will break them.”
If there’s one thing I know, then it’s that even men like us rarely forgive themselves for letting people they are supposed to protect get hurt. Her family will go crazy with worry over her. Every day they’re going to wonder what’s happening to her. They’re going to imagine how she’s suffering. Her mother will blame her husband and brother. And they will blame themselves. Their guilt will spread like cancer among them. And I will fuel their worry. I will tear them apart.”
“My family and fiancé will tear down Las Vegas if you hurt me.” “Oh, I hope they do, so I can bathe in their blood,”
“I haven’t started playing, and you aren’t a mere chess piece. You are the queen.”
“I’m the king.” “You aren’t unbeatable.”
“Whatever you take, it’ll always be less than what he would have gotten, because I would have given myself to him willingly, body and soul, and there’s nothing you can do about it. You will have to settle for the consolation prize, Remo Falcone.”
Content to become the beautiful tamed bird in Danilo’s gilded cage.
“I would like a word with you, Capo to Capo. From one man who had his territory breached to another. Two men of honor.”
“Tomorrow we will start playing, Angel.”
“I will choose the bite of cold steel over the touch of your unworthy hands any day, Remo Falcone.”
There was something else holding him back, something dark and powerful.
And I swore to myself that no matter the price, no matter what it would cost me, one day I would be the one to bring Remo Falcone to his knees, the one to break the cruelest man I knew.
“You will have to stitch her up yourself. You played this game and lost. You underestimated your opponent,”
“I don’t want Remo’s apology. I want him lying at my feet in his own blood.”
“I’m not Remo,” he said quietly, “but I’m a Falcone, and I love bloodshed. You better watch your tongue.”
“Let me give you a piece of advice, Angel. Choose your battles wisely,”
“Your pride will be your downfall,” I said. “And your fury will be yours.”
“Then we’ll fall together. Isn’t that the beginning of every tragic love story?”
“We won’t have a love story. Not a tragic one, not a sad one, and definitely not a happy one. You can have my hatred,” Serafina said fiercely.
“Everything, everyone, has a weakness. It’s only a matter of finding it,”
“Are you scared of Danilo’s wrath if he finds out his angel hides a few black feathers beneath the glowing white of her plumage?”
“Maybe they’ll rise after I’ve burned down their pride, but not everyone is built to rise from the ashes.”
A fucking kiss when I wanted so much more. But kissing Serafina had been like the first hit off a crack pipe. It got you addicted from the very first taste. I wanted to kiss her again, wanted to steal every piece of her innocence.
“But I will swear loyalty to you because even if I hate what you, Nino, and Savio do, you are my family.”
“You didn’t choose Danilo. You will be given to him like an unwilling captive and the ring around your finger will be your shackle, the marriage your cage.”
“You aren’t broken, Angel. Sacrificing yourself for someone you love isn’t weakness.”
Her whispered words broke the silence. “I wonder whose game is more dangerous, yours or mine, Remo?”
I wanted Remo, had never wanted anything more.
I’d never felt freer than in that moment with Remo between my legs, showing me pleasure.
“You always watch me like something you want to touch but aren’t allowed to. Who’s holding you back, Angel?”
“Don’t you want to be free of society’s shackles for once? To do something forbidden?”
“Oh, Remo, I will be your first angel. Patience is a virtue, and you will be rewarded for it.” I kissed his ear then trailed my tongue over the rim.
“Tell me, Angel, what will be my reward for my patience?”
“Something forbidden. Something you aren’t meant to be gifted.”
He possessed me. He owned me. I was the queen.
He was the king. Checkmate.
“You are mine now, Angel. I own you. Even if I ever let you go, I’ll still own you. You will always remember this day and deep down you will always know that you are mine and mine alone.”
“Who knew hatred could be this beautiful?”
“It’s strange when your nightmares are less horrendous than reality,” she whispered. “I’ve lived it, Angel. It makes you stronger.”
“Funny that you say that. When your soldiers attacked my territory, they fired at my thirteen-year-old brother. You broke those fucking rules first, so stop the bullshit.”
Love was a delirious game for fools, and Serafina was many things but not a fool.
