“Perhaps one day you’ll find someone who will love you despite what you’ve become, and she will make you want to be better.”
“Not famous,” I told her. Notorious.
“No. I only just found her, but I’m sure he’ll approve.” I had a feeling Stefano was right. “Don’t waste your time. She’s already taken.” “By whom?” “Me,” I growled.
My mother had always said I was a fixer, that I needed something broken so I could see if I was capable of mending it—injured animals, sick people, broken-down cars. Her. She’d said it would get me in trouble one day. Because people couldn’t be fixed, and one day I’d find someone so broken, he’d break me before I could mend him. Was that what had drawn me to Fabiano from that very first second? Had I sensed that something about him was broken and I needed to fix it? FABIANO
“Sometimes we have to let go of our family if we want to amount to anything in life.”
He was all hard lines and muscle, power and danger, but when I touched him, his skin betrayed that he was only human.
“Fear me because I’m the eye and the blade.”
I needed to stop imagining there was something in him. I needed to stop wanting his touch when the same hands did horrible things to others. Things I couldn’t even imagine. Things I didn’t even want to know.
She trusted me to respect her boundaries. Leona might be my undoing.
“You can’t mean that. Love is what makes us human, what makes life worth living. Love is unconditional.”
It felt as if he’d laid me bare without touching me, as if he knew my deepest desires, my darkest fears.
Fabiano was a danger to anyone around him, but to my heart he posed the greatest danger of all.
“Leona,” I whispered, leaning into her again, surprised by the despair in my voice. Careful, Fabiano. You are my enforcer.
I was a hypocrite because even as I’d warned her about my darkness, I knew I would never let her go.
I’m sorry. The idea of you leaving me is the worst torture I can imagine. Be the woman Aria gave me that bracelet for. Stay, even if I’m not worth it.
“I betrayed for you, I killed for you,” I said roughly, pulling out of her slowly until only my tip remained inside her. “I’ll bleed and I’ll die for you.”
“Tried to make him see light in the dark.” “Like you did for him,” he said with a tilt of his head. It wasn’t a question.
“I don’t want to leave Las Vegas. Because Las Vegas is your home, and you are mine.” He pulled me into a painful embrace and I sank into him. My protector.
