Because Remo had shown me a new purpose, a new destiny. A new family.
He had been born a fighter. It was in his blood, and he’d showed me how to fight, how to survive, how to kill.
Don’t try to look behind that mask, girl. You won’t like it. “We
“It’s in our nature,” I said. “Survival of the fittest. Power struggles. Blood thirst. That’s all still ingrained in our DNA.”
“No, you can’t stay away, because that’s no longer up to you. He’ll decide from now on, and he won’t let you stay away until he gets whatever it is he wants from you.”
“The Camorra owns the city and its people. And now he owns you.”
My mother had always said I was a fixer, that I needed
something broken so I could see if I was capable of mending it—injured animals, sick people, broken-down cars. Her.
She’d said it would get me in trouble one day...

“Sometimes we have to let go of our family if we want to amount to anything in life.”
“Temere me, perché sono l’occhio e la spada,” Fabiano said in what sounded to me like flawless Italian. He caressed the words with his tongue, almost as if he was their lover. A shiver raced down my back. How would it feel if he whispered words of passion into my ear in that same voice? “What…” I cleared my throat, hoping he couldn’t tell how his closeness and voice affected me. “What does it mean?” “Fear me because I’m the eye and the blade.”
I could tell she didn’t have much experience kissing. Fuck. That knowledge was the last straw. I had to have her. Every little inch of her. Every goosebump. Every freckle. Every fucking shy smile. All for myself.
And I had to protect her from all the wolves she believed were sheep.
This was a place he came often, I could tell. This city, it was important to him. It was his home.
“Living in the shadow of your family isn’t easy,”
“Sleep tight, Fabiano, if your conscience lets you.”
“That knife,” he said in a low, threatening voice as he held out the blade between us. “It can be your salvation or your downfall.”
“This knife can give your opponent another advantage over you. If you can’t handle the knife, you shouldn’t use it.”
“I can see that you’re scared. Fear is never a good companion in a fight,” Fabiano said,
“Because you don’t like to share.”
“Love is a weakness, a sickness. You’ll see where it gets you.”
“You can’t mean that. Love is what makes us human, what makes life worth living. Love is unconditional.”
“If you don’t fight for what you want, you won’t get it. People like us don’t get their wishes handed to them on a platter.”
“I will fight your battles for you now, Leona. I told you I’d protect you.”
“I would have been happy becoming Consigliere for Dante Cavallaro and the Outfit. Back when I didn’t know anything, I thought it was the ultimate honor to follow in my father’s footsteps. Now I know there’s no honor in inheriting your position. The only way to deserve a position of power is if you fight for it, if you bleed and suffer for it.”
“They left. Because they left, my father wanted me dead. And the boy he wanted dead … died.”
“Or perhaps deep down you know you can’t trust a man like me. Perhaps deep down you know I’m not safe.”
Fabiano was a danger to anyone around him, but to my heart he posed the greatest danger of all.
“But there’s nothing honorable about making an innocent woman pay for her father’s debts, Remo.”
“That’s what you really are. What we both are. Do you think she can accept it?”
Love is a sickness, a weakness.
“Because if I stay, I won’t get the future I’ve always wanted,” I tell her. “Sometimes the future we thought we wanted isn’t the future we need.” I shake my head. “He isn’t a man I should love. That’s why I need to leave.” Mom tilted her head. “Can’t run from love.”
“I betrayed for you, I killed for you,” I said roughly, pulling out of her slowly until only my tip remained inside her. “I’ll bleed and I’ll die for you.”
“Love only gets you killed. That’s what my father used to say. I suppose he got one thing right.”
“I loved you like a brother. Tonight, is where it all ends.”
“We all have to die. We can choose to die standing up or on our knees begging for mercy. Remo’s laughing death in the face like any self-respecting man should.”
“This will always be my fight as long as Remo lets me.”
“Playing dirty. I like it.”
“Leona must be safe. She must be mine. I want her at my side. I want to spend my life with her.”
gratitude. “I don’t want to leave Las Vegas. Because Las Vegas is your home, and you are mine.”
