Luka filled the empty places in my life slowly, carefully, with his easy smile and stupid jokes. He brought me back to myself.

It’s been a dream since before I even had the courage to make dreams.

And isn’t it silly, to love the way someone’s things look like next to yours? Little bits and pieces of a life lived in parallel.

“Just because you let yourself love someone, doesn’t mean they’re going to leave.”

It’s easy like this to think of him as mine.

“Why?” I ask. His answer is important. “Because I really fucking want to,” he releases on a breath.

There’s simmering arousal, a liquid heat that plucks at my skin. A drumbeat of desire. And a giddy awareness, a tiny flame of hope.

That didn’t feel like faking.

“I’ve been thinking about kissing you all week,” I feel him say against my lips.

That’s nice. I’ve been thinking about kissing him since I was twenty-three.

“For everything to go perfect,” I whisper. I curl my hands into his t-shirt and then relax them again. “For my brain to slow down.”

He’s already seen all the messy parts of me.

“You look pretty when you come.”
