“Then how about being my enemy with benefits?” “Why enemy?” “Because they make the best lovers, don’t they?”
Something is telling me I made some kind of deal with the devil when I agreed to this enemies-with-benefits arrangement. But in all honesty? The devil never looked more attractive than he does right now.
“She didn’t.” “She didn’t?” He blinks, his brows knitting together. “Then why the fuck am I wearing this?” “Because you want to be her friend, and she wouldn’t have forgiven you otherwise.”
“Awesome. I still kinda ship you two together.” “You what?” I say, staring at him like he’s crazy.
“You’re like twin flames. So much alike, it’s scary.”
“After you and Ava left, Layla told me to go check on Moore. She knew what Ava did to him. And, well, it was hilarious, but he obviously didn’t agree. I told him to calm down and think before he did anything, but it seems like he didn’t listen.”
“You’ll regret it.” I hold his gaze, ready to do anything to take him down. “If you don’t want anyone to see a picture of you with just a hockey glove on your dick, you’ll back off and leave her alone. If not, I’ll make sure you pay for it.” “We will make sure you pay for it,” Benson corrects me, and at this very moment I know he’ll be my friend. A real one. Not just a teammate.
She’s reading Kill Switch? I wonder who her favorite character is. Oh my goodness. Ava. You’re unbelievable. The woman just heard you getting fingered in the college library, and you’re curious about the book she’s reading?
“I don’t fuck just anyone. I’m not Clay.” I punch him in his shoulder, and he laughs. “You just called your best friend a manwhore.”
Clay used to make fun of me, calling me “Mr. Bang Bang and Gone”. Not that it wasn’t the truth.
“And I’m not your best friend,” she mutters in annoyance. “I’m just some random chick who decided to talk to you about some random guy.”
“Just because I don’t say anything doesn’t mean I don’t know. I always loved Mrs. T, and I wish her only the best.”
“You wouldn’t have called an ambulance if you knew your future could be stolen either.”
There’s an awkward pause, but then everyone around us starts whistling cheerfully. Apparently, Colton Thompson having a girlfriend is a big deal for the team, and they’re all happy for him.
“I don’t care what you say, Ava. You’re mine. And soon enough, you’ll be proudly flashing a ring on your finger so the whole fucking world—so every single person on this planet—will know you’re Colton Thompson’s wife.”
Ava has trust issues. You made her believe you didn’t care about her. Even if it’s not like that in reality, you left her when she was in a really vulnerable state. It’ll be hard to make her listen to you.
“Everything changed once I knew you might be pregnant. The only thought I had was that I needed to secure my future for us.”
“I not only thought about it, I even asked him, in case something went wrong with hockey. I wanted to be sure I could support you. It’s the only thing that matters.”
“Almost,” I state, inhaling deeply. “I love you, Ava. I love you more than fucking hockey, and for someone like me, that sounds like the ravings of a lunatic. If anything, I’m obsessed with you, because any time I get to taste you, I crave you even more. You are the only girl I want, the only one I’ll ever need. And I’ll do anything for you to give me another chance. Please, Ava.”
“What did you do to Jordan? She told me she’s not allowed to talk to me.”
“One time I let you fuck me bare, and I got pregnant in a fucking penalty box,” she drawls. And then she bursts out giggling. “We conceived our baby in the sin-bin. It’ll be quite a story for our family.”
“Will you come to San Jose with me? I know it’s unexpected, but I’ll fucking die without you there.”
It’s not about you. It’s about my grandchild, and I intend to be the best grandpa in the world, even if the competition is tough.
“Sorry, Dad. My husband just proved why I hate him. Tell Pen I say hi. I can’t wait to see you two next week. Love you.”
