Because if that was all real—if what he’d told me was true… Well, I’d had something precious and beautiful, hadn’t I? And I’d lost it. They might say it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. But they were full of shit.
And when you have nothing left, even a scrap of something is important.”
