“That’s funny. I liked you better when I thought you hadn’t groomed my little sister and then fucked her over.”
Because the very last thing I need in my life is someone who makes me feel like there’s not enough oxygen in my lungs when I’ve only just caught my breath.
I swipe my phone off the bedside table and call my mom. “What’s wrong?” is how she answers the phone. Her instincts are wild.
His mouth slants over mine and he swallows my laughter like he wants to keep it for himself. He created it, so I suppose it’s only fair I give it back to him.
“I just remembered that he called me the morning after you two first got together. And do you know what he said to me? I shake my head. It’s all I can manage. “He said, ‘Mom, I met her.’ And I said, ‘Who?’ ” Loretta’s lips curve up, her eyes taking on a faraway look. “He said, ‘The woman I’m going to marry one day.’ ”
Lexie Tyrie liked this
His mouth drops to my ear and he whispers, “Dr. Hamilton in the streets, filthy slut in the sheets.”
Yeah, that’s what she needs. To forget her name and get a new one.
“You have to freak out with me because I need you. And I love you. I love you so much it paralyzes me to think of carrying on without you. You’re not allowed to shut me out. Because you made me need you, and now you have to deal with the consequences.”
“No sluts in here, right?” she quips, glancing around the room, looking for evidence of something I would never, ever do to her. “Only one,” I reply as I hug her from behind and rub my stubble over her cheek.
She winks at me. “Anything you want to say to this future wife of yours tonight, Silva?” I don’t need to think twice. I hold the mic up to my lips and murmur, “Te vivo.”
It strikes me that perhaps I’m not an easy woman to love, but Theo does it so effortlessly that I feel like I could be. Like I deserve to be.
I can’t keep up with the tears anymore, so I just let them fall. Accepting this isn’t some disease I have. It’s happiness.
“That night we were reckless.” His voice cracks. “But god, I’d be reckless with you over and over again if it means ending up here.”
