One of the strangest parts of working in a school is how it throws the whole system into question. You realize your teachers never had any real authority—they were just older than you and held a stack of detention slips. But I guess that’s how everything is, growing up: The systems you once trusted turn out to be nothing more than poorly constructed fantasies of power and order.
