Momma would be horrified if she knew I was running around in my nightgown with a cold bite in the air. Too bad Momma isn’t here anymore.
“I don’t know, Goldie,” he whispers. “I woke up and just felt like you were there. That you needed me. And then—”
she always reminded me of the sun. She brought light into my life.
“That’s the thing about marigolds. They’re all beautiful.” My eyes immediately find his. He just called me beautiful. Right?
“Brendan is too old for her,” I bite. If he touches her, he’s as good as dead. Even if he’s one of my oldest and closest friends.
I’d do anything to help heal his heart. Even if it means breaking mine again in the process.
“There’s nothing for you to worry about. For me, it’s always been you.”
Will he pretend that he didn’t spend all night clutching me to his body like he was afraid I was going to disappear? Probably.
“You’ve always had me. You just weren’t paying attention.” He swallows. Somehow the air becomes even more electrified around us. “I am now.”
“It bothers me because he can’t fucking have you, Goldie. He couldn’t have you then, and he can’t have you now.”
She’s my Goldie. The sun. The stars fail in comparison to her, but they sure do put up a fight.
“Mare, so help me god if another man has touched you—tasted you—” I say through gritted teeth—“then they’re as good as fucking dead.”
“Come for me, baby. You can scream if you want to. There’s only me and the stars here to hear you.”
She’s my everything. My ruining, and I want everything she’ll give me.
“That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. I didn’t want you to risk your dreams for me.” “Don’t you know you’ve always been my biggest dream?”
“I’ve never been very good at goodbyes,” Dad mumbles, pulling me into his chest.
The boy I’ve loved my entire life is slipping through my fingers, and there’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t keep it together. Not anymore.
I’m devastated to lose him. He seems fine with losing me.
While she was making her dreams come true, I was doing everything to build a house she could call home once she’d achieved every single one of her wildest dreams.
I think you might find out that while she has many dreams, her biggest one was always you.”
“Yes. I’ve had you under the moon before, let me claim you under the sun, in our field of marigolds.”
My love for you won’t falter. I’m in it, baby. No matter where you are. No matter how long we’re apart.”
I’ve dreamt of this day since I was a little girl. He’s on one knee in front of me, looking at me with so much love.
In the same way I can always sense him, I can sense her. I can sense them.
Hi Mom. Hi Linda. In the middle of the marigolds, with Cade clinging to me, I know that Mom and Linda somehow, some way are here with us.
