think I’m going to like having a dad,’ Damian replied, which took me by surprise. I realized then that the boys had never had the experience of a father or a decent male role model, and as a single carer I hadn’t been able to provide that either. My spirits rose a little. This move wasn’t just about me not being able to successfully foster three young children long term; it had the advantage of showing them what a two-parent family was like.
