“Can’t. I just met my future wife and I need to know if she’s single.”
And he’s clearly not the guy for her. If she were mine, I’d never take my eyes off her.
Dear god. How am I the single one when these guys are this bad at talking to girls? Do they really think they’re helping me out?
And have them continue to talk me up to her like I’m their kid brother that can’t get a date? No way.
“Ex-boyfriend.” Hannah’s big grin matches mine. Giddiness I haven’t felt since I was a kid spreads through me. They broke up. Hell yeah. Best news I’ve had all day.
“Is that right?” Ash asks her, but his eyes are locked on me. “How did I not know this?” “Maybe because we met four hours ago.” “That’s not entirely accurate.” I glare at him. If he tells Liza the whole story like he did the nurses upstairs, I’ll duct tape his mouth closed. As if he can see my thoughts, Ash’s upper body shakes with quiet laughter.
“How do you know he didn’t break up with me?” He scoffs. “Nobody is that stupid.”
“She brought her roommates.” The S at the end of the last word hangs in the air while my brain connects the dots. Roommates. More than one. Roommatesssss. Plural. Both of them. My heart skitters to a stop. Hell yeah. Bridget is here.
“You’re alive.” His gaze travels down the length of me, holding on my legs for a fraction longer than necessary before slowly dragging up. “And I’m dead. I suddenly understand why there was a brawl at the club.”
That just makes her smile widen. Fuck, she’s gorgeous.
The best kiss I ever had was with this smoking hot girl I met at work. Yep. Yep. That’s jealousy making the sugar cookie turn bitter in my mouth. Me Wow. At work? Scandalous. I guess mine was probably this guy I dated briefly my freshman year of college. Ash Jesus, woman. I meant you. I met you at work. Brb, gonna go jump off a cliff.
“I’m intrigued. Show me more.” “You must really hate hanging ornaments.” “Or really like looking at you.”
“Fucking hell,” he mutters, stopping in front of me. He slowly brings his stare up to my face. “My heart just stopped for a second. I forgot how gorgeous you are. Damn, it’s good to see you.”
“You’re close,” he says. “I think it’s the alcohol.” “I think it’s my dick.”
Casually obsessed.
“I guess it’s okay I showed up without warning then?” “I think my heart catapulted out of my body when I realized it was your car. It’s really you?” “In the flesh.”
“Come for me, Bridget. It’s all I’ve thought about for the past twenty-four hours.”
“Who did this?”
“I am going to have a very hard time being a gentleman,” he says, running a hand over his jaw. “My girlfriend is the hottest woman alive. Or dead. You’re the hottest woman to ever exist.”
“A toast.” Jack lifts his glass. “To Ash and Bridget.”
