My gaze snagged on his abs. There were so many of them, stacked on top of each other like books on the shelf beside him. Abs for days.
“You can’t be shirtless in here,” I blurted out. “It’s a health hazard.” He raised an amused eyebrow. “A health hazard.”
“I’m turning thirty soon.” She twisted her fingers together. “It’s time to make some changes.” My eyebrows pinched together. She didn’t need to change a thing. She was adorable, with her pretty eyes and sweet little mouth. Even her glasses were cute in that dorky-girl way. The collar of her sweater was pulled to the side and a pale pink bra strap peeked out, and my gaze raked down her form. At Emmett’s wedding, I was going to ask her to dance but every time I tried, she had disappeared.
Her wanting to change bummed me out. Lots of guys in town would jump at the chance to be with her, but she didn’t realize that. She just needed to leave her store once in a while.
“Wyatt, I hate to be rude, but you’re a terrible surf instructor.” He laughed and continued paddling. “You’re on an accelerated curriculum.”
Sharks don’t go around looking for a fight like a drunk gym bro at a bar. They mind their own business.
“What are you doing here?” I snorted. “Now that’s customer service. ‘Welcome to Pemberley Books. What are you doing here?’”
Queen’s Cove is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and you surfing with the mountains in the background…” I sighed and shook my head. “Gorgeous.” “You think I’m gorgeous?” The side of his mouth hitched further in a roguish grin. I stumbled on the sand and huffed an embarrassed laugh. Of course, I did. “I meant the mountains. The mountains are gorgeous.”
“Don’t bother. Don’t drink something you don’t like. Order the good stuff next time, Hannah. Order what you like. You deserve it.”
“My mom used to say, there’s a story for every soul.” I leaned my chin on my palm. Something happy fizzed in my chest, talking Wyatt’s ear off like this about silly dreams. “I believe it. I believe the right book is out there for everyone. I love that part of my job.”
“You look cute tonight,” Wyatt said, and my mouth parted in surprise.
“Okay, but Beck?” Avery raised an eyebrow. “Beck is cute. Paging Dr. Gorgeous, am I right?” Max nodded and fake coughed. “Doctor, I think I’m sick.”
Hannah was cute. Our date yesterday was her first. Her date. Not our date. That wasn’t a date. Panic streaked through me.
The thought of someone messing up with Hannah made my skin too tight. A rock formed in my throat and I swallowed. Carter was off the table. There was no way Hannah would let him anywhere near her naked. Holden wasn’t interested in Hannah, I was pretty sure. I frowned. I’d talk to him later about that, make sure he knew that it was a practice date. It could be a practice date for both of them. But Beck. A noise came out of my throat, frustration and disapproval. Beck would be all over Hannah. What if he went too fast? What if he pushed her and she didn’t want to? What if he was selfish? My

I had the urge to tell her I was reading Pride and Prejudice. The boring, weird cousin, Mr. Collins, had just visited their home. I had read late into the night, laughing to myself as Lizzy maneuvered the awkward conversation with him. For some reason, I held back from telling this to Hannah. I wanted to see how the story ended first.
“Hand me your phone.” “Why?” My stomach dropped. “Oh god. Am I going on Tinder? I’ve heard it’s only for hookups now, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that.” He snorted. “No, we’re not setting you up on Tinder.”
“I was jealous, okay? I’m jealous because he looks at you like he wants to fuck you.” His jaw ticked.
“What?” She smoothed a hand over her wet hair. “Did the seaweed get me again?” “No, you look beautiful like this.” The words flew out of my mouth.
With me, it would be better. Hotter. I’d make her writhe under me. I’d go down on her until she pulled my hair and gasped my name and couldn’t handle how good it felt. I was desperate to see how she looked while she came, all hazy and flustered and breathless.
“I always feel so much better after being out on the water in the mornings with you.” My heart squeezed. “The water will do that.” She shook her head. “It’s not just the water. I like hanging out with you. You always make me feel better about things I’m worried about.”
A ripple of delight moved through me at the idea of Wyatt using me purely for his own pleasure. An image flashed in my mind of his hands on my hips, thrusting into me hard, racing towards a release. My core throbbed at the idea.
I felt the sharp sting of his hand on my butt before I registered the noise of the slap, and I could barely gasp before his hand smoothed over the fabric of my shorts. “How am I supposed to control myself around you when you wear little shorts like this?” His hand slipped beneath the hem, over my bare skin, and I whimpered against his mouth. “I don’t want you to control yourself.”
When my center made contact with Wyatt’s cock, something white-hot shot through me, right to my core, and I bucked and gasped. It was a fraction of a second but it was too good. My thighs jerked closed, snapping tight around his waist. Wyatt’s length pulsed against me and his hands tightened on my bottom, so hard I’d have bruises tomorrow. The idea of his marks on me made me more turned on. “Hannah,” he gasped against my mouth. “You can’t do that.” “Sorry,” I whispered. “Didn’t mean to. Just felt so good.” “I know, baby, I know.”
“And after the date, you’re going to come home, crawl into bed, and touch yourself until you come.”
It was different with Hannah. I’d never been close friends with someone I hooked up with. I’d never noticed how their eyes looked in the sunlight or pictured their smile later in the day. There was a constellation of freckles over Hannah’s nose and cheeks that I itched to trace with my fingertip while she told me about a book she was reading.
“Don’t practice with Beck.” His voice was low, barely above a whisper. His gaze locked on mine. “You want to practice? You practice with me.”
“I thought about you while I did my homework.” She gave me a shy but pleased smile before she walked to the door.
