GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is not actually a record of our material wealth, but the fever chart of our consumption.
Crucially, the global economy does not place any financial value on nature. Environmental destruction and climate change create enormous (and growing) costs for governments, and thus taxpayers. Yet none of this is factored into the GDP with which we measure a nation’s health. Nor is it felt in the pockets of those who cause it.
