Finally, it bears reiterating that scripts are first-class parts of your system. They should live for its entire life. They should be version-controlled, maintained, tested, and refactored, and be the only mechanism that you use to deploy your software. So many teams treat their build system as an afterthought; in our experience, build and deployment systems are nearly always the poor relation when it comes to design.
