Shortly after Russia’s humiliating defeat in the Crimean War and the death of Tsar Nicholas I – the same man who had been winched down the salt mine in Cheshire less than a decade earlier in 1844 – the new emperor Alexander II launched an ambitious reform programme with the aim of catching up with the West.
