Amazing opening scene
Since that night, when she had learned that it is men who make decisions and women who must follow them, my sister had not once mentioned Ciarán. Indeed, she had not spoken much at all.
Nothing had changed. Nothing at all, save deep inside, where nobody could see.
The one thing I could not come to terms with, for it was a feeling quite new and strange to me, was the ache within me, the longing to be held, the need to touch and be close and at length to rise again to that peak of joy that no words can describe.

I cannot believe that because he is her son, he must inevitably work evil in his life. To say that is to say we have no choice at all in what we do, in how we live.
