She was used to the little orange light. It came up all the time. It meant that someone was lying.
“It’s not a hover. It’s a car. A gasoline car.”
“You probably have a client list a mile long. I shouldn’t expect royal treatment.” His mouth twitched. “Although I guess I do anyway.”
“Miss Linh, from your blood samples I have deduced that you are, in fact, Lunar.”
Lunar. And cyborg. And a fugitive.
“Nope, nothing. Maybe she’s been ignoring my comms on purpose.” “Maybe she’s been busy?”
“Take it,” he said, and flashed his signature prince-charming grin, as if he were completely unfazed. “And think of me.”
Inside was the finest pair of gloves she could have imagined. Pure silk and shining silver-white. They were tall enough to cover her elbows, and a row of seed pearls along the hems added the simplest touch of elegance. They were gloves fit for a princess.
“Why, Linh-mèi, what a pleasure. We are so glad you could join us tonight.”
It was not her fault he had liked her. It was not her fault she was cyborg. She would not apologize.
“Of course, she should.” There was a lightness to his words, as if he believed his presence alone could dissolve Adri’s hostility. He fixed his gaze on Cinder. “She is my personal guest.”
Without hesitating, Cinder wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
“That’s enough,” said Kai. “I don’t care where she was born. Cinder is a citizen of the Commonwealth. I will not have her arrested.”
