But there’s a shade in my heart, because I saw him laughing with those sailors on his ship, and some of them drowned, yet he doesn’t seem to think of them at all. Perhaps he did not really know them. Or perhaps he’s the kind of person who chooses to focus on the pleasant, hopeful side of life, not the sadness. What a truly wonderful man.
“For one low price, you can eat as much soup as you want.” A stupid grin spreads across my face, even as I try to hold it back. Averil stands in the open doorway, staring at me, shock and wonder churning in her eyes. Her gaze softens, her brows bending slightly as if she’s truly seeing me for the first time. The sweet tenderness flickering over her face—it’s enough to turn a man into a muffin. I cannot bear it much longer. “Soup,” she whispers. “Soup,” I say hoarsely.
