If you want to isolate the supernova light, you take a spectrum from the part of the galaxy containing the supernova, which is flooded with light from the galaxy, and then you take a spectrum from a different part of the galaxy, away from the supernova, and then you subtract the second reading from the first. Ideally, the spectrum of the supernova itself pops out.
