Over the course of the 1990s, roughly 1 million Jews left the former Soviet Union and moved to Israel. Immigrants who came from the former Soviet Union in this period now make up more than 18 percent of Israel’s total Jewish population.14 It’s hard to overstate the impact of such a large and rapid population transfer to a country as small as Israel.
