Humanity in this future setting seems at once almost arrogant with power, yet at the same time unknowing of the environment in which it finds itself. It is the universe of the individual, there are no navies, no galactic patrols flying heroically to the rescue in the last chapter. People have responsibility, and this unyielding hostile galaxy they live in forces them to face up to the consequences of their actions, entirely in keeping with the level of ability that their technology imparts.
