The starting point for all that the Bible knows as wisdom is the knowledge of God. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (Proverbs 9:10). This is the principle that controls all of Proverbs—that to know wisdom, one must first know the Lord.
informationism is “a non-discerning, vacuous faith in the collection and dissemination of information as a route to social progress and personal happiness.” Rising nearly to the realm of religion, informationism preaches “the is over the ought, observation over intimacy, and measurement over meaning.”
my concern is that as we dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of more information from more sources, we will be so overloaded by information that we will no longer have the time—perhaps even the ability—to ponder that information, to consider it, to take the time to study it and analyze it and meditate on it.
As we increasingly dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of information, we grow increasingly unable or unwilling to distinguish between knowledge and information, wisdom and knowledge. We do well to ask: If we have little knowledge in our minds, how much can we have in our hearts?
