“Yeah, you’ve got this whole angry little Tinkerbell vibe happening. I dig
But I’ve always been a little reckless.
Winter, as in Summer’s sister? Fuck, that’s a stupid combination of names for two sisters. They should hate their parents instead of each other, if you ask me.
I consider offering her an aspirin from my truck, or an orgasm. I hear those help too.
I want to know more about Winter Valentine. Like when that divorce is happening.
I get off on watching Winter thaw.
“Careful, that one’s got claws,” Cade offers right as Willa shoves a pointy elbow into his ribs. I grin. “That’s okay. I like having my back scratched.”
Her mouth opens and then closes. “You are so annoying.” “Is that a medical diagnosis?”
“Contractual clarity has never made me harder.”
I’ll take it. I love watching this woman thaw.
“Shut your dog up, Theo. If it wakes my baby up, I’ll castrate you.”
“You’re telling me I have a daughter and I missed it all? The pregnancy? The birth? Everything?”
All I know is the man in my bathroom would never have sent me that text.
“What’s her name?” A watery laugh follows my question. “Please tell me you didn’t name her Autumn.”
Theo was already hot as fuck, and Theo holding a baby is even hotter.
“It will ruin any splendid memories of my vagina you might have.” “Nah. That’s impossible. Those memories are why my right forearm is bigger than my left.”
“I could fucking bury whoever made you believe you’re as unlovable as you seem to think.”
“Watch your fucking tone when you’re talking to the mother of my child.”
With that, I push off the counter, open the back door and wave a hand at the only woman who has ever captured my attention. My new business partner.
He’s singing to our daughter. And dancing. And cleaning.
My hand on Vivi. Vivi’s hand on Theo. Theo’s hand on me. Connected.
And when I go to bed that night, the hinges on my door don’t squeak at all.
Is horny cleaning a Virgo thing?
“You do know you’re in love with that girl, don’t you?” I flop down beside her and sling an arm over her shoulder, ready to get lost in the very best medical drama while sitting beside one of my favorite women in the world. “Yeah, Mom. I know.”
“Theo loves easily. That’s just his nature. But he doesn’t often love hard. He keeps that part of himself, the one that’s seen loss too, locked up tight where it can’t get hurt. But you, girl? He loves you hard.”
“He said, ‘Mom, I met her.’ And I said, ‘Who?’” Loretta’s lips curve up, her eyes taking on a faraway look. “He said, ‘The woman I’m going to marry one day.’”
She stomps her foot in faux outrage. “How do you know? Maybe I’ve had so much sex.” “Nah,” I say, as we head into the darkened hallway, “Cadillac Ranch” filtering to my ears from the dance floor. “There’d be no point since I’m the only one who can make you come.”
“Dr. Hamilton in the streets, filthy slut in the sheets.” And I laugh.
“I think I more than like you.” “Because I’m your baby daddy?” “No.” I meet his eyes at the final red light before we pull up to the house. “Because you make me like myself . . . and you’re the only one who ever has.”
“Hey, Theo?” I whisper, reaching across to dust my fingers over his forehead and into his hair. “Yeah?” “You’re not an interloper. You’re her dad.”
“I get it now. Enjoy my leftovers.” He tosses the envelope out the window, and it sails past me. I make no move to pick it up. I’m too busy smiling at Dr. Rob Valentine. “She’s no one’s leftovers, and I’ve been enjoying her since before you ever saw the divorce papers, buddy.”
“Anything you want to say to this future wife of yours tonight, Silva?” I don’t need to think twice. I hold the mic up to my lips and murmur, “Te vivo.” It’s better than “I love you”. It’s more accurate. It’s us.
“That night we were reckless.” His voice cracks. “But god, I’d be reckless with you over and over again if it means ending up here.”
“Winter Hamilton, will you marry me?” I smile through the tears. “Would hate to make a liar out of you after how long you’ve been telling people you’re going to marry me.”
