Theo interrupts me with an eye roll. “Mention our two-year age difference like it matters again, and I’m going to mock you mercilessly.”
All work and no play makes Theo a dull boy.”
But Theo doesn’t follow suit. Instead, he scowls at me. “I could fucking bury whoever made you believe you’re as unlovable as you seem to think.”
“Well, Winter and I spent a lot of time talking about how to bring this up, but I should have known to just leave it to you, Harv.”
“Don’t give him any ideas. Young, impressionable minds do not need the Harvey Eaton version of the birds and the bees.”
Luke, all of seven years old, scoffs before saying, “Yeah, Dad will lose it if you say ‘fucking like bunnies’ in front of me again.” His eyes go round as saucers, and he slaps a small hand over his mouth like he might be able to shove the words back in.
Willa leans across the table and whispers loudly, “Shit, Harv, you’ve made Daddy mad now.” Harvey’s lips press together to hide a smile as he rises and walks outside to get a “talking-to” from his son. “I heard that, Red,” Cade calls out as he marches out the back door without another glance.
Theo snaps his fingers over the table, drawing his mentor’s attention back to himself. He went from looking amused to downright murderous. “Watch your fucking tone when you’re talking to the mother of my child.”
Theo: It’s not my fault I’m so fertile that no barrier can stop me. Julia: Gross. You’re my brother. That’s the line. Mom: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Theo: Want me to come over and do something truly special that will have you thanking me profusely? Winter: Are you always this horny? Theo: I was going to say clean your house. Get your mind out of the gutter, Dr. Hamilton.
The door jangles, and Willa walks in, fiery mane glowing in the morning sunlight. “Why the fuck is everyone crying? Mondays aren’t that bad.”
“I think people mistake you being in a bad mood when you’re just overwhelmed. I think you needed to lie here for a few minutes with no one needing you. I think you’re overstimulated and even the best of us require some time to collect ourselves.”
Theo Dale Silva has wormed his way into my heart, and I never stood a chance at keeping him out.
“You are a national treasure, Harvey Eaton.”
“You were what I’ve always needed and never had.”
“You’re not an interloper. You’re her dad.”
