not likeable, Theo. People don’t like me. Not really.” I hold up a finger and give him a wide-eyed look, signaling that now is not the time for him to barge in with his tongue-wagging nice-guy act. “People respect me because I’m smart. Or because I’m accomplished. But they don’t like me.” The man across from me stares. I can see him turning my words over in his head. It tilts back and forth as though he is considering everything I’ve just said. “I think I like you because you are a heart-stopping, jaw-dropping type of beautiful.”

“Winter. I’d have properly fucked you in the back room of that gas station if you’d asked me.”

strikes me I’m watching a man unravel right before my eyes. A beautiful, shocked man. I’ve spent the past eighteen months assuming the worst about Theo, and here he is, crumbling to pieces, like the rain is disintegrating the clay that holds him together.

“Now that I’m here? I’m here. Okay? No expectations, but I want you to let me help you. I want to get to know her if that’s okay with you.” She nods, and more tears fall. I bring my other hand up and try to catch them all, but I fail. They come too fast, so I pull her head against my chest and opt to let her soak my already damp shirt. Seems like the least I can do for this woman after how thoroughly I’ve let her down.

“Why not? We could be.” This woman never backs down. It’s fucking infuriating, and I love that about her. “Because the things I dream about doing to you are horribly unprofessional.”

And when I get back that afternoon—all pampered, and rested, and sane—I walk into a spotless house. A happy little girl plays with wooden blocks on the carpet. Theo builds them up, and she knocks them down, laughing hysterically while he acts offended that she could do that to him. On the stove, a delicious aroma wafts from a large pot. Theo calls it “Brazilian Stroganoff” and says it’s something his dad used to make for his mom. And when I go to bed that night, the hinges on my door don’t squeak at all.
