“You are everything that makes me good,” he said. “And I am everything that makes you terrible.” She swallowed the thickness that had gathered in her throat. Before, she would have balked at those words, but now she understood the power in being feared. And she wanted to be dreaded.
She had come to expect that Hades would always be by her side, and his absence now made the world feel wrong.
“Theseus would say that is power,” she said. “It is power,” he agreed. “But there is power in many things.”
“It’s hard to know what evil exists in the world until it finds you.”
“What is technology but the evolution of what already exists?” said Theseus.
It was ridiculous to expect her there, foolish to feel disappointment when she wasn’t, yet he could not help how it crashed over him, a weight heavier than the net.
“It is curious that death would choose life as a bride,” Hippolyta said. “It is like the sun falling in love with the moon.”
“It is not Persephone or Hades who are dangerous, Father,” she said. “It is their love. Tear them apart, and they will tear you apart.”
“The audacity of a man,”
such was the folly of man, to create the thing that destroyed him—
There was a part of her that wondered if the Underworld was dying, and if that was true, did it also mean Hades was dying?
“Can I help you?” She knew what he was asking. Thanatos had influence over emotion. He could ease her suffering. In the past, she’d refused. She’d wanted to feel because she felt like she deserved it, but this was different. “Please,”
i’m so used to seeing heroines refusing help 100% of the time, so it’s refreshing to see Persephone vulnerable and accepting help, not being scared to admit she needs it. there’s a certain strength in that.
