The term “rough trade” has always been bandied about in gay circles. It can cover a lot of ground. It usually summarizes a lower class of rent boy. But it can also cover a breed of boys who sit at the bar entertaining gay patrons for drinks like big, ugly escorts. Most of these boys are straight.
