What a Root Canal Procedure Accomplishes A root canal is the complete removal of the guts of your tooth. A large hole is drilled into the top of your tooth, and the inner pulp of the tooth is removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned with chemicals. Once the inside is clean, a synthetic material is placed within the tooth, which is now partially dead, and a crown is placed on top of the tooth.
