The first clocks did not have dials or hands at all. They did not need them, since their use was simply to sound the hour. An illiterate populace that might have trouble reading a dial would not mistake the sound of bells. With the coming of the “equal” hour, replacing the “temporary” or “canonical” hour, the sounding of hours was ideally adapted for measurement by a simple machine. Sun time was translated into clock time.
